Editorial Standards

How we work, what we require, and what readers should expect.

Distinction between fact, analysis, and opinion

Faultline Journal maintains a clear distinction between factual reporting, analytical interpretation, and stated opinion. Every article is labelled with its type — Analysis, Opinion, Essay, Editorial, Briefing — so readers always understand the epistemic status of what they are reading.

Analysis pieces are grounded in evidence and argument. Opinion pieces represent the stated viewpoint of a named contributor. Editorials represent a publication-level position. Essays are more reflective or thematic in character. Briefings are shorter, more timely analytical pieces.

Contributor standards

All contributors to Faultline Journal are identified by name and are accountable for their work. We do not publish anonymous pieces except in exceptional circumstances with clear disclosure. Contributors are selected for genuine expertise in their subject areas and are expected to write with intellectual seriousness and honesty.

We do not accept paid opinion, sponsored content, or material that represents undisclosed institutional interests. Any relevant affiliations or conflicts of interest are disclosed.

Sourcing and evidence

Analysis pieces are expected to be grounded in evidence and to make their reasoning transparent. Where sources are cited, they are to be accurately represented. We do not misrepresent the content or conclusions of cited material.

Opinion pieces are expected to be honest about their nature as interpretation and viewpoint, not as objective report.

Editorial review

All pieces published in Faultline Journal are reviewed by an editor before publication. Factual claims are checked where practicable. Structural and argumentative coherence is assessed. We do not publish first drafts.

Corrections policy

When factual errors are identified in published work, we correct them clearly and promptly. Corrections are noted within the article and, where appropriate, flagged to readers. We do not silently edit published articles to change their meaning.

To report a factual error, contact us at [email protected].

Tone and professionalism

Faultline Journal publishes serious analytical writing. We expect contributors to engage with difficult and contested subjects with rigor and intellectual honesty. We do not publish personal attacks, inflammatory rhetoric, or content designed to provoke rather than persuade.

Strong opinions are welcome. Gratuitous provocation is not.

Independence

Faultline Journal is editorially independent. We have no institutional affiliation, no political alignment, and no funding relationships that would compromise editorial judgment. Contributors write independently and are not directed by the publication to reach particular conclusions.
